Audience

I asked a group of 10 people to answer questions about my first two editions of my magazine and my website, they were a group of culturally sophisticated 16-25 year old in the AB demographic. I asked them via email with the questions and then they responded with their answers.

Do you prefer to see models who are like you or models that are clearly fashion models?

Most people said that they like to see models who look clearly like fashion models as they like to be inspired by what they look like and how they dress as it's more of creating a fantasy than real life, however, three people answered that they would like to see models like them as then they were able to relate to the models and would more likely pick up a magazine that did this.

What types of clothes/ settings would you like to see on a new magazine?

Most people said that they would like to see clothes of the current trends so that they can see what is popular and keep up to date. They said that the settings they would like to see were rural areas where you would see the fashion being worn and some plain backgrounds like traditional magazines.

Do you use the contents to help you decide whether to buy the magazine?

6 out of 10 people said that they do use the contents to ensure that the magazine contains stories that they would want to read about but 4 out of 10 people said that they if it is a magazine that they read all the time they won't bother looking at the contents and will just look at the front cover.

Research - Codes and Conventions

Website:

https://www.vogue.co.uk/magazine

Since vogues demographic is similar to what our brief was I used it so that I could have an idea of what that demographic would want to see, I used a similar layout style and also wanted to include a page about fashion so that I could do a bit about 'get the look' which is used in lots of fashion magazines so that people can get the same or similar cheaper looks to the people that are modelling in the magazine.

Statement of Intent

How do you intend to use the four areas of the media theoretical framework to communicate meaning and meet the requirements of your chosen brief? (200 words each)

Magazine:

For my magazine to fit the brief it was aimed at a culturally sophisticated 16-25 year old AB demographic, I am going to do this as I will use a sophisticated layout which is not overly smothered in showing features as this is quite old school to me and I think the layout should be quite modern and fit what the customer would be wanting to see. I also thought about how it was going to be sold in retail so will make my first edition bright and colorful so it would stand out to you one a shelf and the title at the top so you can easily read what it is called as it is surrounded by other magazines. I am going to use a girl and a boy to make the fashion magazine unisex and inclusive as there is not many magazines like this that are aimed at both genders and I think it gives it a modern edge. I was trying to show a diversity and an equality in the two magazine covers. This magazine is under the umbrella of Bauer magazines, but this magazine is different to all of the other magazines that they produce since it is for a different demographic and is a modern version of the classic magazine layout and this means that it fills in the gap that they haven't filled so far.

Website:

For my website to fit the brief I am going to make sure that the website presents a sophisticated look so that the target audience that the magazine would appeal too would also like the look of the magazine. I think they would want to see multiple different people from different groups in the same magazine so that they can be presented in an equal light, I have done this by using different genders to present that it isn't for one specific group of people and that everyone could pick up the fashion magazine and get something from it. Since it doesn't stick to stereotypes that a fashion magazine should be about men's or women's fashion and only they can pick it up and get something from it but the opposite of that and that appeals to a wider audience making an inclusive magazine for Bauer. I want to try to convey that the people that I am going to take photos of are people like the audience I am aiming at so that the people that would read the magazine would have a similar style and presentation and the aspiration mediated image I will take would be achievable for them.

How do you intend to link your media products to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the digitally convergent nature of your media production? (100 words)

I have used the combination of a website and magazine for the ability that the website is able to promote the magazine since the magazine is the first two editions of a new magazine and is in the initial stages. This means that the magazine would currently be the financially viable product as it is being sold at retail and I have not included adverts on my website. Later on I would put adverts on my website when the magazine picked up and had more issues released as it could be the more financially viable product as everyone is transferring to using online products and you could use lots of adverts for promotion and profit from them.
